Considering the fact that vehicles are mass produced, manufacturer's specified settings are general guidelines and does not consider each engines individual characteristics. Dyna-tuning is the process whereby the engine settings are adjusted (tuned) while continuously monitoring the performance during the adjustment, in order to obtain the position of optimum performance.
Dyna-tuning optimizes your engines operating parameters, ensuring optimum performance and efficiency. The dynamometer provides print-outs of the torque and power characteristics of the engine through the engine revolution range. The graphs can be used to determine the optimum speed or revolutions for gear changes to suit your driving style, whether it is for optimum acceleration, optimum towing ability or optimum fuel efficiency.
Often, on newer level vehicles, there is not much you can “tune” on the Dyna (without fitting a Unichip). The reason for this is that many of today’s cars are not built with spark distributors anymore, therefore you cannot simply adjust the ignition timing by turning the distributor. The amount of fuel that goes into the engine is determined by various sensors like MAF, MAP, TPS, Engine Temp, etc. Therefore you cannot change this “setting” just by simply doing a dyna tune.
Please note that we can still do whatever we want by fitting a Unichip to your vehicle, available for most makes and models!!! (see Unichip-Q section).
We also use the Dyna for finding causes for power loss, etc. on many cars. Our dyna can measure Power by doing a loading or acceleration run. Loading runs take a bit longer, but are more accurate, where acceleration runs are quicker but less accurate. Loading runs display power at the wheels and, remember, more than 1200 meters above sea level, this makes the value substantially less than the manufacturer specs. Acceleration runs compensates by calculation for losses through the drivetrain and high altitude, so the value of this run would be higher (closer to manufacturer spec). We do quite a lot of power runs on Bikes and Cars if you just want to know how much power your vehicle produces.
We do tuning on all Off-road racing, Rally and circuit cars equipped with MoTeC systems!!! We normally get very good results as the dyna equipment we use are very accurate and stable.
